Safeguarding Courses

Acorn Training works in collaboration with Tammie Redman, an expert and experienced safeguarding trainer and consultant, to deliver the most comprehensive safeguarding training programme in our region.

Our safeguarding training programme is suitable for childminders, early years settings, schools, and many other organisations that work with children. 

The training programme considers the individual safeguarding policies and procedures of a variety of different local authorities, including Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Central Bedfordshire, Bedford Borough, among others.

Summary:

To provide a basic introduction to safeguarding and child protection, covering the requirements for all staff who work with children on a frequent or infrequent basis.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the training, delegates should:

  • Be aware of relevant legislation and local procedures
  • Be familiar with sign and indicators of abuse and neglect
  • Understand their own role and responsibility in relation to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • Know what to do if they have concerns about the welfare of a child

Aim:

To provide an overview of FGM and professionals' safeguarding responsibilities in FGM cases. To ensure participants understand child sexual exploitation, who is most at risk and how to support them.  To ensure participants understand how parents, siblings and children in their care can be radicalised, who is most at risk and how to support them.

Prevent Duty Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify what is radicalisation?
  • Identify parents and children at risk
  • Explore the process of radicalisation
  • Identify opportunities for intervention
  • Increase awareness of the signs of radicalisation in parents, siblings and children
  • Consider the most appropriate way of supporting an individual
  • Determine ways to keep an individual safe
  • Be confident to refer appropriately
  • Understand the role of other agencies as it relates to radicalisation
  • Learn about other support services and what help and information is available
  • Consider the role of the CHANNEL Panel

CSE Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify what is child sexual exploitation?
  • Identify children at risk
  • Explore the process of child sexual exploitation
  • Identify opportunities for intervention
  • Increase awareness of how people who sexually exploit other operate
  • Minimising the risk
  • Consider the most appropriate way of supporting an individual
  • Determine ways to keep an individual safe
  • Be confident to deal with a disclosure
  • Understand the role of other agencies as it relates to CSE
  • Learn about other support services and what help and information is available
  • Consider the role of Multi Agency Risk Management Meetings (MARMM)

FGM Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand what FGM is and distinguish between the four types of FGM.
  2. Identify key health risks and consequences of FGM.
  3. State the legal position in the UK regarding FGM.
  4. Understand how and when FGM is carried out.
  5. Identify who is at risk of FGM and describe the key indicators.
  6. List some of the common justifications for FGM.
  7. Be aware of your role in preventing FGM and supporting those who have undergone FGM.

Target Group:

Those working in healthcare, police, education (including early years), border force and children's social care and is open to all professionals who wish to gain an understanding of FGM.

Summary:

This accredited course is endorsed by the Safer Recruitment Consortium. There should be at least one person on a recruitment panel who has undertaken this course.

Aim:

  • To enable those with responsibility for recruiting staff within their own agency to understand the context of safer recruitment, establish a safer recruitment process and maintain an ongoing culture of vigilance that deters and prevents abuse and challenges inappropriate behaviour.

Please note there is a competency test at the end of this training.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:-

  • Gain the skills to deliver safer recruitment to their own agency
  • Identify the key features of staff recruitment that help deter or prevent the appointment of unsuitable people
  • Consider policies and practices that minimise opportunities for abuse or ensure its prompt reporting
  • Begin to review their organisations’ policies and practices in recruitment with a view to making them safer 

This training must be renewed every 5 years
