About our Nursery

Acorn at Rowans is a 46 place day nursery in Fullers Slade, Milton Keynes. Attached to the Rowans Family Centre, we offer fully funded places for eligible 2, 3 and 4 year olds.

The nursery offers full and part-time care for children aged four months to four years, and is open 7:30am until 6pm, Monday to Friday, all year round. All Acorn nurseries are closed for all bank holidays, between Christmas and new year, plus our four training days each year. This means that monthly fees for 2024 are calculated over 49 weeks. You will not be charged for these days, however fees are payable for additional closure days which are out of our control, eg: additional bank holidays over the standard eight. Funded childcare options are available.

The nursery provides children with a caring, challenging and stimulating environment. Children are supported by a highly qualified and experienced staff team who have ample knowledge and experience of child development and special education needs. All children are assigned a key person which helps children to become familiar with the setting and to feel confident and safe within it.

We are proud to provide a nurture group with a focus on supporting children with language delays and/or challenging behaviour.

The outdoor area is continually evolving and benefits from a large, covered decking area that provides children with shelter and shade throughout the year. The back garden has a fully equipped mud kitchen; there are digging and planting areas for the children to explore a more natural environment. In the front outdoor area, there is a large, covered sandpit and play structure so the children can enjoy outdoor play all year round.

The Acorn room is a bright, colourful room for 18 children, aged three months to two years old. The room is set up to help develop and meet all children’s needs. A quiet/sleep area is placed within the room.

The Squirrels (2 - 3 year olds) and Oaks (3 - 4 year olds) room are joined together, accommodating 28 children in total. Children are supported by members of staff who provide activities that are age and stage appropriate for all children to encourage their overall development, as well as providing age appropriate activities and group time to prepare children from Oaks for their transition to school.

We place a strong emphasis on outdoor learning and the children enjoy play outside in all weathers. Pre-school children, (Oaks) develop their outdoor learning at regular Forest School sessions, and a variety of imaginative and creative play activities can be enjoyed alongside regular outings and trips.

All the nursery meals are freshly prepared and delivered each day by Acorn Catering, which operates from our hub kitchen at our Shenley Church End nursery. We use local and ethically sourced produce to create our delicious meals and all our menus have been designed to be nutritionally balanced ensuring we offer a variety of foods.

Meet Rita, our Nursery Manager

My name is Rita and I have been working in the early years sector for over 15 years now.

Originally from Portugal, I moved to the UK at a young age and am fortunate enough to be fluent in both languages.

I hold a Level 3 Childcare qualification, as well as studying at the University of Southampton, specialising in BSc Education, shortly after beginning my leadership and management career in a variety of roles in Central London. Upon starting a family, we chose to move to Milton Keynes, as the area to settle and grow together. And this is where my journey at Acorn began.

I enjoy supporting my team in providing the best learning outcomes for the children in our care, in particular learning and exploring around language development and its impact on cognitive abilities.
